Care home feasibility study shows Lodestar’s impact on resident treatment

Professor Bob Yang, Consultant Urologist at The Royal Berkshire Hospital and at The Forbury Clinic, presented a poster at ICS 2026 that highlighted the impact Lodestar UTI can have on improving the care of residents in elderly cares settings.

The study aimed to show how Lodestar could help staff determine the presence of a UTI quickly to allow them to take intervening action. In the study 49% of residents showed symptoms that included confusion or behaviour change, with half lacking any typical UTI symptoms.

The results of the study showed that:

  • 55.4% of residents were positive for one or more bacteria (22 results showed a polymicrobial infection)
  • 29.3% of Lodestar-positive results were from residents presenting with atypical, non-specific symptoms
  • A mean time of 117 minutes between sample being provided and action being taken
  • 99% of staff believed testing with Lodestar improved patient care and management of urinary symptoms
  • GP visits and ambulance call-outs reduced

Professor Bob Yang presented the poster at the International Continence Society Annual Meeting in Maastricht on 7th October 2026.
